Today, March 20th, marks the start of Spring in the Iberian Peninsula, also known as the Vernal Equinox. For me, it has long felt like the true New Year—a time to bloom and awaken energy after a period of hibernation and rest.
Just as the sap in plants rises from the roots to nourish the branches, we too feel revitalized in spring. Increased daylight and warmer temperatures affect our nervous system and hormones, filling us with vitality and a desire to move, socialize, and connect.
In ancient Mesopotamia, New Year celebrations coincided with this season. Babylonian rituals honored Marduk, symbolizing renewal and abundance, while sacred unions between gods, like Marduk and Ishtar, ensured fertile harvests. Ishtar, the goddess of fertility and life, later inspired modern celebrations such as Easter (Ostara), which still carries symbols of fertility, like eggs and hares.
One meaning of the word “spring” is a silk fabric adorned with colorful flowers—a perfect metaphor for this season of growth and celebration.
At Symbiotic Colours, we are marking the occasion with workshops focused on plant-based dyes and creative outdoor spaces:
